ITHACA, N.Y. – A Virgil man has died following an accident at Second Dam in the town of Ithaca, the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office announced Monday.
Deputies responded to the dam at around 6:07 p.m. Sunday for a report of an apparent drowning.
Witnesses at the dam told deputies that a man had jumped into the water south of the dam and failed to return to the surface.
Eric Richardson, 20, has been identified as the victim.
Bystanders reportedly jumped into the water several times before they were able to find Richardson and bring him to the surface. He was unconscious, and attempts at CPR were unsuccessful.
The Ithaca Police Department, Ithaca Fire Department and Bangs Ambulance assisted deputies at the scene.
The Tompkins County Sheriff's Office is continuing its investigation.
