GROTON, N.Y. — A fire that broke out at an apartment building in the village of Groton Saturday that left a man in critical condition was intentionally set, according to the results of a preliminary investigation.

At around 1:45 a.m. Saturday, officers from the Groton Police Department and Groton Fire Department were called to a home on 114 Lincoln Avenue for a reported structure fire.
Responding officers found smoke coming from a ground floor apartment located at the front of the building, according to police. The fire was quickly extinguished and the building suffered minor damage.
While at the scene, first responders found a man laying on the ground outside the residence who appeared to be suffering from serious burn injuries, according to Lt. Tim Williams with the Groton Police Department.
The man was transported to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where he is currently listed in critical condition, Lt. Williams said. Police declined to identify the victim's name.
An initial investigation conducted by the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control has determined that the fire was intentionally set, Lt. Williams said.
The investigation remains ongoing.
