Kasperek, a registered Republican, replaces longtime town board member Ron Rocco, who resigned from the board last month after serving for 30 years.

This is Kasperek's first time serving in public office. He says he was recently approached by town board member Ted Testa, who asked if he would be willing to replace Rocco's seat on the board.

"I thought about it for quite a few weeks, and he convinced me that I'd be an asset for the town," Kasperek said.

Kasperek has been a practician optician in the Cortland area for 40 years. He says he looks forward to listening to the concerns of local residents, though it will likely "take a few meetings" to become familiar with the process.
