Cortland sheriff: Drunk driver struck telephone pole, tree

CORTLAND, N.Y. — A Cortland woman was charged with driving while intoxicated and several traffic violations following a crash in the town of Homer last month, the Cortland County Sheriff's Office announced today.

At about 11:21 p.m., July 23, emergency crews responded to a one-car crash at the intersection of East River Crossing Road and East River Road in the town of Homer.

Caroline M. Howard, 39, was traveling north on East River Road when she veered to the opposite side of the road and struck a utility pole and a stop sign, the sheriff's office said in a news release. Howard then continued north on East River Road and struck another telephone pole and a tree before coming to rest in a yard.

Once emergency crews arrived, Howard was transported to Cortland Regional Medical Center for treatment of her injuries. She was later charged with a misdemeanor DWI and traveling at an unsafe speed, a violation.

She is scheduled to be arraigned in Homer Town Court next week.

The sheriff's office was assisted at the scene by Homer Fire and Rescue and TLC Ambulance.
