CORTLAND, N.Y. — Widespread rumors of a person dressed as a clown on the SUNY Cortland campus Sunday night have not been substantiated, according to a statement from the college.

Various users on the social media app YikYak reported seeing a clown walking around campus sometime Sunday evening.

After receiving multiple reports, the University Police Department and Cortland Police Department searched and canvassed the city but did not find a suspect. Police were also reportedly unable to locate any first-person witness who saw anyone dressed as a clown.

"Widespread rumors of a suspicious person dressed as a clown on the SUNY Cortland campus Sunday night have not been substantiated, and no student appears to have been threatened or harmed," the college said in a statement Monday.

College officials say the campus was never on lockdown at any point.

Similar strange clown sightings have been reported in Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Florida in what has become something of a nationwide phenomenon.

Students who see anyone suspicious on campus can contact University Police at 607-753-2111.
