HOMER, N.Y. — A Homer man was arrested Sunday for having an unregistered handgun in a safe in his vehicle, according to the Homer Police Department.

At around 4:45 p.m., officers from the Homer Police Department conducted a vehicle and traffic stop on a motor vehicle that was displaying a temporary inspection sticker that expired in June 2016.

The driver, 26-year-old Nathan L. Skillman, told officers that he had been in prison in the past and was in possession of a handgun, which was contained in a safe in the vehicle, according to a news release from the Homer Police Department. Skillman reportedly did not have a permit for the handgun.

Skillman was charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon, a class D felony, and arraigned in Homer Town Court. He was taken to the Cortland County Jail without bail.

He was also issued a traffic ticket for driving an uninspected motor vehicle.
