GROTON, N.Y. — Two men were arrested in Groton over the weekend after one of them severely beat another man in the face, court records show.

William D. Reap, 53, was initially charged with felonies for second-degree assault and tampering with physical evidence.

Records from Groton Town Court state that he used a blunt instrument to repeatedly hit a man in the face "causing the victim to receive lacerations to the face and loss of consciousness." The man was treated at Cayuga Medical Center before being transported to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania for further treatment.

David A. Reap, 21, then allegedly helped William Reap clean up the mess from the beating -- cleaning blood from the floor and hiding away bloody clothing and items while Groton Police and the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office were outside the residence.

He is also charged with felony tapering with physical evidence.

William Reap's assault charge was reduced to misdemeanor third-degree assault Wednesday in Groton Town Court.

Both men are still in custody, and David Reap is also being accused of violating his probation.

This summer, David Reap pleaded guilty to second-degree rape and first-degree sex abuse. The plea also covered a charge for endangering the welfare of a child and attempted first-degree rape.

According to court documents, in the summer of 2015, Reap engaged in sexual intercourse with a person less than 15-years-old and, for the abuse charge, had sexual contact through forcible compulsion with a person less than 17-years-old.

The plea also required him to register as a sex offender and undergo sex offender treatment.
