GROTON, N.Y. — The Town of Groton is celebrating its 200th Anniversary. Our town is rich in history, including the fact that for a short time we were called Division when we and Tompkins County were first formed in 1817.
From our first settlers, to the booming industries we once had, to the beautiful and comfortable country town that we are today, we have much to remember and commemorate.
The opening ceremony will take place on Friday, April 7, 2017, at 6:30 pm at the Groton High School Auditorium. This is exactly 200 years from the first Town Meeting on April 7, 1817.
The Groton American Legion will formally post the colors accompanied by a local bagpiper. Speakers will include Senator James Seward, Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton,County Legislators Michael Lane and Glenn Morey, and several others. The talented Groton High School Band, Jazz Band and Junior High Band will provide several musical renditions to get the audience tapping their feet. Afterwards, a reception will be held with light refreshments. The event is open to the public and the admission is free.
