Homer flags to fly at half staff to honor late firefighter

HOMER, N.Y. -- The flags at Homer Village Hall and the Homer Fire Station will fly at half-staff until Thursday, May 18, in honor of Wilbur Peters, who passed away on Saturday.

Peters was an active member of the Homer Fire Department at the time of his death and had served the Homer community for many decades, village officials said.

Born in Syracuse, Peters spent his career working with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation as a forest ranger, according to his obituary. He was a member of the Homer Fire Department for 40 years.

Peters is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorinda "Welch" Peters, his two daughters, a sister, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Homer Avenue United Methodist Church of Cortland or The Homer Fire Department.
