Apex Tools to close Cortland facility; 90 jobs lost

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Apex Tool Group, an American supplier of hand tools and power tools, has announced it will close its plant in Cortland by the end of the year.

Apex officials laid out their intentions in a notice submitted last month to the New York State Department of Labor.

The plant's closure, which will occur in separate phases beginning in August, will affect all 89 employees of the facility, which is located on 45 Cleveland Street.

The company has operated at the Cortland facility since 1911.

A spokeswoman for the company told Syracuse.com that the work will be shifted to newer facilities in Pennsylvania and South Carolina.

The move comes on the heels of the company's decision to close its facility near Dallas, Texas, laying off more than 250 employees.
