Update 8:10 p.m. –

PREBLE, N.Y. – About 60 firefighters from seven different fire departments battled a barn fire in northern Cortland County Friday evening.

Crews responded to the blaze near the intersection of Route 281 and Song Lake Crossing at around 5:23 p.m., according to Preble Fire Chief Michael Compton.

The barn was fully engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived.

No cattle were in the barn at the time, though some equipment inside the barn was damaged, Compton said. The owner was inside his home which lies adjacent to the barn.

The barn was part of an old dairy farm, Compton said, and was mainly being used to store machinery.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Fire departments from Preble, Homer, Cortlandville, Tully, and Otisco all responded to the blaze.
