ITHACA, N.Y. — Tompkins Cortland Community College President Carl Haynes has won the 2015 Northeast Regional Chief Executive Officer Award from the Association of Community Colleges Trustees (ACCT). The award will be presented at the 46th Annual ACCT Leadership Congress, which will be held in San Diego in October.
ACCT's Regional Awards annually recognize the tremendous services of and contributions made by community college chief executive officers. There are five regional award winner with one chosen for the ACCT’s Annual Association Award, which will be announced at the October meeting.
In nominating Haynes, TC3 Board of Trustees Chair Elizabeth Burns cited his more than four decades of service to the College, including 21 years as president. “He has achieved a great record and is an even better man,” wrote Burns. Haynes, who is the longest-serving active president in the SUNY system, served four years as president of the New York Community College Association of Presidents. “He is both knowledgeable about and influential in the world of New York Higher Education, and his continuing deep involvement contributes to the success of TC3, our colleague institutions, and all of SUNY,” wrote Burns.
Haynes, who has previously won the Distinguished Citizen Award from both Tompkins and Cortland Counties, started at TC3 as a faculty member in 1969, the second year of the College’s existence. He rose through the ranks before becoming president in 1994.
“He is unequivocally committed to this College, its mission, its students, its employees, and the communities it serves,” wrote Burns. “He has remained loyal to TC3 and has continued to embody what is best about our College.”
