SUNY Cortland field hockey, men's soccer open seasons Tuesday

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The SUNY Cortland field hockey and men's soccer teams are each ranked 19th in Div. III in their respective preseason national polls, and both squads open the season on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Elmira College, both with 4 p.m. starts.

The field hockey team finished 14-3 last season and won the SUNYAC regular-season title before being upset in the conference tournament semifinals.

The men's soccer team posted a 16-5-1 record last fall. The Red Dragons were SUNYAC runner-up in both the regular season and playoffs and advanced to the NCAA Div. III tourament "sweet 16" with two victories after earning an at-large national berth.

The Cortland women's soccer and women's volleyball teams will also open their respective 2015 seasons with home contests against nationally ranked foes on Tuesday, Sept. 1. The soccer team will host 15th-ranked Misericordia University of Pennsylvania at 4 p.m. at Jets Field.

The volleyball squad will host a tri-match with Houghton College and 13th-ranked Clarkson University Tuesday. Cortland will face Clarkson at 3 p.m., followed by Clarkson vs. Houghton at 5 p.m. and Cortland vs. Houghton at 7 p.m.

In addition, the volleyball team will be hosting the 12-team Red Dragon Classic Friday and Saturday, Sept. 4-5. Cortland will face Stockton (N.J.) and Rochester Friday afternoon and St. Lawrence and Utica on Saturday.
