The fire was contained to the second floor and was under control a short time after crews arrived, Friedman said. The family living at the home was able to get out safely.

Fire departments from Homer and Cortlandville were on standby at their stations.

The house suffered smoke and water damage in the blaze. Friedman says investigators are still working to determine a cause of the fire, though no foul play is suspected.
