DRYDEN, N.Y. – Bruce Tytler of Cortland is the newest member of the Tompkins Cortland Community College Board of Trustees.

Tytler was appointed by New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo to a seven-year term expiring on June 30, 2022. He replaces John Daniels, who had served on the board since 2008.

Tytler has more than 32 years of experience working in education. He taught social studies in the Homer Central School District for 20 years before becoming the high school principal in the Whitney Point Central School District, a position he has held since 2008. He also taught in the DeRuyter Central School District and in the Houston Independent School District in Houston, Texas.

“I’ve spent my entire professional career in education,” noted Tytler. “I already have an appreciation for the role of a community college, but I plan to start my time on the board by doing plenty of listening. I have a particular interest in student success, but I look forward to hearing what all the challenges are and then working with the trustees and the staff to find solutions.”

Tytler also spent five year in Cortland city government, first as a city alderman and then serving a two-year term as mayor of Cortland. “I have the perspective of a long-time member of the community the College serves,” said Tytler. “I have a lot of respect for the College. TC3 has done a lot for Cortland and this is great opportunity for me to give back to the College.”

Tytler holds a BA in history from SUNY Potsdam and an MS in education from SUNY Cortland. He earned a certificate of advanced study in educational administration from SUNY Cortland and school district administrator certificate from SUNY Albany. He has served on the SUNY Cortland College Council since 2010 and is a past member of the board of directors for both Communities that Care and Loaves and Fishes.

The Tompkins Cortland Community College Board of Trustees consists of 10 members, including a student trustee elected by the student body. The governor appoints four trustees, two each from Tompkins and Cortland Counties; the Cortland County Legislature appoints two; and the Tompkins County Legislature appoints three.
