Cortland man charged with rape, burglary

CORTLAND, N.Y. – A Cortland man faces a slew of felony charges, including first degree rape, after police say he forced a woman into having sexual intercourse with him.

On Friday, Sep. 25, William Miles, 33, of 22 Court Street, went to the home of a 39-year-old woman who had an order of protection against him, according to the City of Cortland Police Department. He illegally entered the woman's home and forced her to have sexual intercourse with him, police said.

He also broke her cellphone before leaving the residence, according to Lt. Rick Troyer.

Unable to locate him, police obtained a warrant for his arrest. He was taken into custody on Monday, Troyer said.

Miles faces several felony charges in connection with the incident, including first degree rape, first degree burglary, aggravated family offense and first degree criminal contempt. He also faces misdemeanor charges of criminal contempt and criminal mischief.

Miles was arraigned on Monday and sent to Cortland County Jail on $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.

He is due to reappear in Cortland City Court Oct. 2.
