1 dead in Route 13 crash in Virgil

VIRGIL, N.Y. – One person was killed and another was hospitalized following a head-on collision in the town of Virgil early Friday evening.

At around 5:50 p.m., the Cortland County Sheriff's Department responded to a reported crash on Route 13 in the town of Virgil near the Elm Tree Golf Course.

Evidence at the scene indicates one of the vehicles crossed the center line into the oncoming lane, according to the sheriff's department.

The vehicle traveling north on Route 13 was driven by an 18-year-old female, who was transported by ambulance to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, P.A. Her condition is unknown at this time. The vehicle traveling south on Route 13 was driven by a 42-year-old male, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies declined to say which driver crossed the center of the roadway.

Authorities said the names of the drivers are being withheld pending notification of family members.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Fire departments from Cortlandville, Virgil and McLean assisted at the scene, along with TLC Ambulance.
