Arrest made in reported rape on SUNY Cortland campus

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The SUNY Cortland Police Department has arrested a man in connection with a rape incident that was reported on campus earlier this month.

At around 9 a.m. Wednesday, university police arrested Nicholas A. Schaefer, 21, of Buffalo, on two counts of first-degree criminal sexual act, a class B felony, and one count of forcible touching, a misdemeanor.

On Nov. 14, University Police at SUNY Cortland received a report from a student regarding a sexual assault incident that took place in a residence hall on campus. A crime alert was issued and university police continued to investigate the incident.

Schaefer is not a student and was a visitor at the campus when the incident took place, according to police. He has been banned from the campus and an order of protection will be issued for the victim, according to Michael Bersani, assistant director of public relations for SUNY Cortland.

He was arraigned in Cortland City Court Wednesday and remanded to Cortland County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond. He will reappear in city court at a later date.
