Cortland police investigating fatal stabbing outside Palm Gardens

Correction: An earlier version of this article stated that Terry W. Wormuth II, the victim in the stabbing, was 31 years old. Police later released information listing his correct age of 40.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland Police Department is investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred outside the Palm Gardens bar early Sunday morning.

At around 12:06 a.m. Sunday, police responded to Palm Gardens at 52 Elm Street for a reported stabbing.

Officers discovered a male had been stabbed in the torso in the parking lot of the bar, according to police. First aid was rendered to the victim at the scene, who was then transported to Cortland Regional Medical Center where he later died from his injuries, according to Lt. Richard Troyer with the Cortland Police Department.

Police have arrested Mark G. Dill, 58, of Cranston, Rhode Island, in connection with the stabbing. Dill faces charges of first-degree manslaughter, a class B felony, and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class D felony.

The victim was identified as Terry W. Wormuth II, 40, of 21 Lansing Avenue in Cortland. Police said an argument occurred between the two prior to the stabbing.

The investigation is continuing and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death, Troyer said.

The Cortland Police Department is being assisted by the Cortland County District Attorney's Office and the New York State Police Forensic Crime Unit.
