Shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday, police arrested David N. Wegner, 29, of 48 South Avenue, for his involvement in the incident.
On Tuesday, Dec. 1, police responded to 88 Main Street for a report of a woman who had been assaulted. The 72-year-old woman was punched in the face by a man she did not know, and he reportedly said "hi" before doing so, police said.
The victim received a laceration above her right eye, which required five stitches, according to police.
Cortland police conducted numerous interviews over the next several days, reviewing video footage and developing a list of possible suspects.
"The investigation revealed that this was a random act, as there's no relationship between the victim and the suspect," Lt. Richard Troyer with the Cortland Police Department said in a press release Thursday.
Wegner is charged with one count of second-degree assault, a class D felony, and was awaiting arraignment Thursday in Cortland City Court.
