1 – Guilty: Virgil man admits to murdering 16-year-old Cortland High School student

Virgil man pleads guilty in murder of 16-year-old girl – Friends and family members of Amie Leland, a 16-year-old girl who was killed in a grisly murder in May, lined the walls of the courtroom as Judge Julie Campbell read the plea deal into the court record. Michael S. Hammond II, 24, would plead guilty Thursday to second-degree murder in a case that shocked the Cortland community and left many with unanswered questions.

2 – 17 workers rescued at Cargill Salt Mine in Lansing

Miners huddled, joked to keep up warmth and morale – Over the course of the 10-hour rescue effort, the 17 trapped miners stayed huddled together against the cold. "They did what they could do to keep each other warm and keep each other's spirits up," said Shawn Wilczynski, mine manager for the Cargill Salt Mine.

The second to last set of the 17 Cargill salt miners emerge Thursday morning after being rescued from an elevator stuck 900 feet below the surface. A rescue rescue cage lowered from a crane to bring them up four at a time.

3 – Sudden death of 7-year-old boy draws large community response

Willet community comes together after sudden death of 7-year-old boy – A community mourned the loss of 7-year-old Talan Sustad, of Willet, who died suddenly after recently being diagnosed with Leukemia. In the small community of Willet, the news of Talan's death spread quickly. Dozens of people have posted pictures of themselves getting a mohawk on a Facebook page titled "Mohawks for Talan" in remembrance of the boy who always sported the haircut.

Five family members arrested after fight at Cortland County home – A fight broke out in the driveway of a Cortland County home Thursday, leading to the arrest of five people, the Cortland County Sheriff's Office announced Friday.

9 – SUNY employees to get higher minimum wage

Gov. Cuomo announces $15 minimum wage for SUNY employees – The State University of New York will raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour for more than 28,000 employees at its campuses across the state, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Monday. It’s unclear what immediate impacts the wage increase would have on the roughly 1,200 employees on the SUNY Cortland campus.

10 – Accident shuts down busy stretch of Route 13 in Cortlandville

Two-car accident in Cortlandville shuts down Route 13 – Some drivers had to find an alternative route home following a two-car accident on Route 13 Monday afternoon. One of the drivers reportedly struck a utility pole, causing wires to fall in the roadway, according to a 911 dispatcher.
