West Point cadet from Ithaca acquitted of sexual assault charges

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Lukas Saul, a West Point cadet from Ithaca facing sexual assault charges, was declared not guilty, according to a press release from the military academy.

A five-member panel of West Point staff and faculty returned the not guilty verdict on Saturday.

Saul, 23, had been accused of engaging in inappropriate sexual contact with a fellow cadet, who is now a commissioned officer, on three occasions between March and December 2012. His court martial began on Jan. 20.

“West Point takes all allegations very seriously,” said Director of Public Affairs Lt. Col. Chris Kasker. “In this particular case, a court-martial was held to find the truth. All the facts were presented in a full and open hearing and the issue was resolved in a manner consistent with military law and due process requirements.”

Saul had been on administrative leave since August and had not graduated with his class in 2015.

According to Alison Beach, a relative of Saul, he will be graduating, receiving his commission and back pay.
