Update: Police identify driver, pedestrian involved in Groton crash

Police do not plan to pursue criminal charges against a Freeville man who struck a pedestrian with his vehicle in the town of Groton Wednesday night.

Paul E. Miller, 31, was driving northbound in a 2004 Mazda RX 8 in the area of 692 Peru Road when he struck Robert J. Pless, 39, of Groton.

Pless was walking southbound in the middle of the northbound lane of the road for an unknown reason, according to police.

Miller was unable to avoiding striking Pless, troopers said, and no criminal charges are being pursued against him.

Pless sustained serious head injuries and was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where he is listed in critical condition as of Friday morning.

New York State Police, Groton police, Groton Fire Department, and Groton and Dryden Ambulance provided assistance at the accident scene.
