Wind chill warning in effect Saturday for Cortland County

CORTLAND, N.Y. — Extreme cold is headed our way beginning early Saturday morning.

A wind chill warning will take effect in Cortland County beginning 4 a.m. Saturday and lasting through 1 p.m. Sunday. Warnings will be in effect for the Southern Tier, the Syracuse area and the entire Finger Lakes region.

The arrival of brutally cold air will be accompanied by snow squalls beginning late Friday evening and overnight, bringing a quick burst of snow with near whiteout conditions between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. An inch to 1.5 inches of accumulation is possible during this period.

This weekend's forecast will mark the coldest air since last February, creating the potential for frostbite and hypothermia. The coldest air will arrive Saturday night and last through Sunday morning.

Temperatures will fall to the single digits Saturday morning and fall to zero to 5 below Saturday afternoon.

Wind chill readings are expected to drop to between 20 below and 35 below zero from Saturday to Sunday morning.
