At around 11:42 p.m. Wednesday, the City of Cortland Fire Department responded to a reported fire at 193 Clinton Ave.
Firefighters were able to confine the fire to one room and quickly extinguish it. Nursing home staff evacuated several residents in the immediate area, but four were forced to remain behind closed doors due to thick black smoke.
Firefighters used electric ventilation fans to clear the hallway of smoke. Closed fire doors in the hallways contained the smoke to a limited area, the fire department said.
Three nursing home staff and one nursing home resident were taken to Cortland Regional Medical Center for evaluation after the fire.
The Homer Fire Department assisted at the scene. The Cortlandville Fire Department stood by at the city of Cortland Fire Department headquarters for backup.
The City of Cortland Fire Investigation Division is investigating the cause of the fire.
