April is almost over! We had a small glimpse of beautiful spring weather at 4-H Camp Owahta then way too much snow. Now, even though we have all of the snow off the ground, the weeks and days before camp begins are dwindling down. As of today we only have 66 days before summer camp begins!

I am excited to say that we had over 85 individuals help prepare for this summer this past weekend. I was thrilled to see so many people not only from our camp families but also from our larger family here at Cooperative Extension. The Master Gardener Volunteers came out to help make our camp garden take one more step towards being fully functional by laying the beds, putting down garden plastic and gravel on the garden, and even getting the top soil in. The Boy Scouts of McGraw, Troop 91 along with their Cub Scout counterparts came and made a huge dent in the general clean up and especially in helping raise the docks to their proper height. We had 60 student volunteers from SUNY Cortland who helped paint camp. The coats of paint look beautiful. Nothing makes me feel like camp is truly ready like a fresh coat of paint on bare wood! And of course our camp families came out and supported in each of these areas, especially in helping get the kitchen area cleaned up and with raising the docks.

I cannot say thank you enough. Volunteer work this past weekend has helped us make sure that camp will be ready for all campers to arrive starting this July. The level of excitement about camp this summer was palpable this past weekend. We encourage you to check out the Facebook page to see pictures from this weekend.

We are continuing to recruit high quality staff members for this summer. If you know of any caring and empathetic individuals over the age of 18 who want to make a positive impact in the lives of children, please direct them to me at [email protected].
