Driver charged with DWI after crash in Preble

PREBLE, N.Y. — A Virginia man has been charged with driving while intoxicated after crashing on Interstate 81 in the town of Preble early Friday morning.

At about 5:20 a.m. Friday, New York State Police in Homer responded to a property damage accident involving one vehicle on I-81 northbound in the town of Preble.

An investigation determined that Carlos C. Word, 24, of Richmond, V.A., was driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol content of .22 percent when he moved from his lane and crashed into a guardrail.

Word was consuming a beer while driving, police said in a news release.

He was arraigned in Preble Town Court and taken to Cortland County Jail. His next court date is pending.
