Victim of fatal Memorial Day crash in Ithaca identified

ITHACA, N.Y. – On Tuesday, the Ithaca Police department released a statement providing further details on a fatal crash that occurred early Monday morning in Ithaca.

The full IPD statement reads:

On May 30, 2016 the Ithaca Police Department responded to the 1100 block of East State Street regarding a single-car motor vehicle crash. The operator of the vehicle was transported to a nearby hospital but did not survive injuries sustained in the crash. The Ithaca Police Department Crash Reconstruction Team responded and completed a reconstruction of the crash.

Reconstructionists determined the vehicle was traveling eastbound on East State Street and that the operator was the sole occupant of the vehicle. As the vehicle traveled east it crossed the center line and struck a tree on the opposite side of the roadway. Contributing factors in the crash have been determined to be alcohol consumption, failure to maintain lane, failure to use headlights, and failure to use seatbelt.

The operator has been identified as Larry Chap, a 29 year old male from Willseyville, New York.

A GoFundMe page has been established to help pay for funeral expenses and traditional Cambodian ceremony costs for Chap. The fund is seeking $15,000.

The page describes chap as a "unique loving gift to the lives of many people in Ithaca... He has been a glue and inspiration. He has been the light to all darkness. He has been the joy to all sadness."
