Two charged in burglary of Virgil home

CORTLAND, N.Y. — The Cortland County Sheriff's Office has charged two people in connection with a burglary at a home in the town of Virgil following a three-month investigation.

Artis L. Young, 24, of Cortland, and Derek M. Brown, 29, also of Cortland, have each been charged with three felony counts of burglary, grand larceny and conspiracy.

Deputies said the burglary occurred April 1 at a residence on West State Road while the homeowners were away. Items taken in the burglary included electronic equipment, personal documents and a small amount of cash.

After following several leads, investigators were able to locate and recover the items that were reported stolen and arrest the persons believed to be respsonsible for the burglary.

Young is also accused of burglarizing a home in the town of Homer earlier this year. He's being held in the county jail. Brown is serving a sentence in state prison on a separate charge.

Young and Brown were arrested Tuesday and arraigned in Virgil Town Court. A future court date had not been scheduled at the time of the sheriff's office press release today.
