Rhode Island man indicted in Cortland stabbing

Mark Dill, 58, of Cranston, Rhode Island

CORTLAND, N.Y. — A Cortland County grand jury has served up an indictment against a Rhode Island resident accused of fatally stabbing a man outside a Cortland bar late last year.

Mark G. Dill, 59, of Cranston, R.I., has been indicted on three felony counts, including first-degree manslaughter, second-degree manslaughter and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. At the time of his arrest, he had only been charged with first-degree manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.

Terry W. Wormuth II, 40, of Cortland, was stabbed in the torso in the parking lot of the Palm Gardens tavern at 52 Elm Street Nov. 29, according to the Cortland Police Department. He was taken to Cortland Regional Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

Witnesses to the incident say the two got involved in a heated verbal argument, though it remains unclear what sparked the altercation. According to court records, Dill told police that he acted in self-defense.

“I hope the guy didn’t get hurt real bad. I’m sorry. This isn’t me at all,” Dill allegedly told police.

A future court date has not been set.
