Excellus BlueCross BlueShield donates $3,000 to YWCA of Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. — Excellus BlueCross BlueShield recently presented a $3,000 grant to the YWCA of Cortland, which was selected from a pool of 185 upstate New York applications to receive one of the nonprofit insurance company’s 2016 Community Health Awards.

The YWCA of Cortland will use the grant to support the organization’s newly formed group for grade 6 through grade 8 girls who reside in low-income homes and experience stress. The girls will learn skills in the areas of nutrition, personal health and safety, appropriate social interaction and leadership.

At the awards presentation, Jim Reed, regional president, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, presented the grant to Sara Earl, program director, YWCA of Cortland.

Excellus BlueCross BlueShield presented its Community Health Awards as part of its mission to improve the health and health care of the residents of the communities it serves.

The company’s Community Health Awards are granted to Central New York institutions that positively influence the health of the community. Awards are based on scope of need, goals of the program, number of people expected to benefit from the program and positive impact on the community’s health status.
