Brooklyn man wanted on robbery charge arrested in Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. — A New York City man who local police knew only by a street name was apprehended in the city of Cortland Friday, the Cortland County Sheriff's Office announced today.

Mikquan Legall, 31, was found at the Holiday Inn Express in Cortland following a three-month investigation by the sheriff's office.

Deputies first attempted to apprehend Legall on May 20 after receiving a tip that narcotics were being sold out of an apartment on Charles Street in Cortland. After serving a search warrant, police found crack cocaine, drug paraphernalia and a loaded handgun at the residence.

Aziz Karim Hicks, who lived at the apartment, was arrested on felony drug and weapons charges. At the time, police believed Legall was also taking residence at the apartment, though he was never located.

Over the course of the next several weeks, investigators from the sheriff's office were able to identify Legall by his real name. They learned that he was wanted by the New York City Police Department on a bench warrant for first-degree robbery.

On Friday, investigators spotted Legall walking in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn Express on Locust Avenue in Cortland. After determining that he was staying at the hotel, investigators called in the sheriff's department's K9 unit and Cortland city police officers and proceeded to make entry into Legall's hotel room, where he was arrested without incident.

Legall was taken to the sheriff's office where he was charged with first-degree robbery, a class B felony, and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.

He was arraigned in Cortland City Court on Saturday morning and taken to Cortland County Jail without bail. The sheriff's office said Legall will be turned over to the NYPD to answer to the robbery charges.
