Police: Groton man assaulted woman with axe handle, belt

AUBURN, N.Y. — Police have filed charges against a Groton man accused of beating and strangling a woman at a home in the city of Auburn.

On Wednesday, police were called to a residence on Liberty Street for a reported domestic incident.

Officers arrested 30-year-old Harry White, alleging that he assaulted a woman with an axe handle, threatened her with a black pellet pistol, attempted to strangle with her a belt and threw a cinderblock through her window.

The female victim was treated for her injuries at Auburn Community Hospital.

White had been the subject of an "ongoing manhunt" by the Auburn Police Department's Detective Bureau in connection with a stolen credit card, police said in a news release. He was also wanted on an active arrest warrant from the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office for third-degree arson.

Additional charges have been filed against White in the stolen credit case. Auburn police say White used the credit card at numerous locations throughout Cayuga and Onondaga County in late July.

White was arraigned in Auburn City Court Thursday and taken to Cayuga County Jail on $20,000 cash bail or $50,000 property bond.
