Cortland woman pleads guilty to stealing from employer

CORTLAND, N.Y. — A Cortland woman pleaded guilty Thursday to a felony grand larceny charge in response to accusations that she stole from her employer over a nearly four-year period.

Esther Bidwell, 57, of Sherman Road, pleaded guilty Thursday to fourth-degree grand larceny, a class E felony, according to an official in the Cortland County Court Clerk's office.

Bidwell was arrested Dec. 14 and charged with felony counts of third-degree grand larceny and first-degree falsifying business records.

According to police, Bidwell began writing checks to herself in 2012 while working as a secretary for DLH Properties in Cortland. The company manages several rental properties in the area, including the Country Townhomes and Village Terrace Apartments on Holiday Drive in Cortland.

By the time the company caught on to her scheme, Bidwell had stolen more than $23,000 from the company, Cortland police said.

Bidwell is scheduled to be sentenced Sep. 15.
