Man charged with DWI after striking telephone pole, damaging property

CORTLAND, N.Y. — A Cortland County man has been charged with driving while intoxicated following a crash in the town of Marathon last Sunday, the sheriff's office announced today.

On Sunday, July 31, sheriff's deputies responded to Tim Hill Road in Marathon for a report of a motor vehicle crash.

Upon arrival, officers found a 2017 Chevrolet Volt at rest against a telephone pole.

An investigation determined that James C. Hawley, 52, was operating his vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, the sheriff's office said. Hawley also reportedly struck multiple items of property with his vehicle by the time officers arrived at the scene.

Hawley was transported to Cortland Regional Medical Center for injuries he sustained in the crash. He was later charged with a misdemeanor driving while intoxicated and failure to keep right, a violation.

He was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in Marathon Town Court August 17.

Correction: An earlier version of this story indicated that Hawley lived on Tim Hill Road. He lives in the town of Marathon but not on Tim Hill Road.
