Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Cortland County

CORTLAND, N.Y. — The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for southeastern Cortland County until 9 p.m. Tuesday.

At 8:04 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located near Ithaca, moving east at 45 mph.

The storm is expected to be near Dryden at around 8:25 p.m., Virgil at around 8:30 p.m. and Marathon at around 8:40 p.m.

Forecasters say 70 mph winds are possible and people should expect "considerable tree damage" and "damage to mobile homes and roofs." Large hail, damaging winds and lightning are also likely.

The NWS recommends moving to an interior room in the lowest floor of a building.

The severe thunderstorm warning also applies to Tompkins County and parts of Chenango and Broome counties.
