CORTLAND, N.Y. — A Cortland County man who failed to show up for sentencing in a felony drug case last week has been arrested on new charges, according to the Cortland Police Department.

At about 7:30 p.m. Friday, Cortland police were called to 8 South Ave. for a man who had cut a 30-year-old woman in the face with a knife.

The man, later identified as 35-year-old Michael J. Gohl, barricaded himself in a room in the house by the time officers arrived on scene, according to Lt. David Guerrera with the city of Cortland Police Department.

While Gohl locked himself in the room, he threatened to harm police officers or himself if they attempted to make entry, Lt. Guerrera said. After about 20 minutes, Gohl came out of the room without incident and was taken into custody.

The woman suffered minor facial injuries and did not require immediate medical attention, police said.

Gohl has been charged with third-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies. He was arraigned Saturday and was due back in Cortland City Court today.

Judge William Ames had previously issued a warrant for Gohl's arrest after he failed to show up for sentencing Tuesday in Cortland County Court.

In August, Gohl pleaded guilty to one felony count of second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and one misdemeanor count of fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. He had been arrested in April, along with Patrick W. Mott, 20, of Cortland, after police allegedly found meth in their vehicle during a traffic stop on River Street.
