MARATHON, N.Y. — A 14-year-old student has been arrested in connection with a reported bomb threat at Marathon High School, state police announced Tuesday.
At around 9:30 a.m. Monday, state police in Homer responded to Marathon High School for a reported bomb threat after a 14-year-old male student told another student that he had a bomb in his backpack, police said in a news release.
The New York State Police Bomb Disposal Unit, with the assistance of an Ordinance Detection Canine, checked the backpack and entire school for an explosive device and determined there was no such device present.
Prior to police arrival, school officials directed the school be evacuated, police said.
The 14-year-old student was arrested for first-degree falsely reporting an incident, a felony. He was issued an appearance ticket directing him to appear in Cortland County Family Court at a later date and released to his parents, authorities said.
Marathon Central School District officials could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.
