Cortland Junior High School initiative looks to improve attendance

Attendance matters! For the 2016-17 school year, Cortland Junior High School has launched the second year of the attendance initiative. This initiative is for the Cortland 7th and 8th grade students and consists of monthly attendance challenges at the individual, grade, homeroom, and team levels. Students who successfully complete these challenges are invited to a lunch celebration. Each challenge features a different lunch choice from Cortland community businesses.

The attendance initiative program at Cortland Junior High School began during the 2015-16 school year and proved to be a success. More than 375 of the 400 Cortland Junior High School students participated last year. This year, the school hopes to attract even more students.

“The Cortland community realizes the importance of good attendance,” said Penny Pomeroy, a counselor at Cortland Junior High. “They realize that good attendance can have a positive impact on student achievement, as well as the overall graduation rate for our district. The community has been very generous in helping us with this attendance initiative.”

Seventeen community businesses supported the initiative, including Bubble Tea, Cortland Boosters, Deep River Snack, Greek Peak, Mark’s Pizzeria, Moe's Southwestern Grill, Baked by Melissa, Seabreeze, Shipwreck Golf, SUNY Cortland, Syracuse Chiefs, Taco Bell, Target, Walmart, Wegmans, Wendy's, and Yaman Real Estate. This year, Applebee's, Doug's Fish Fry, Friendly’s, Maurices, McDonalds, P&C Fresh, Pontillo's, Price Chopper, Subway, Taco Bell, and Wegmans have agreed to help.
