The SUNY Cortland women's volleyball team, in conjunction with five other teams from the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), will be raising money and awareness for important causes during conference play Oct. 21-22 at Corey Gymnasium.

Cortland — along with the teams from Buffalo State, Geneseo, New Paltz, Oneonta and Plattsburgh — will be holding a silent auction of athletic wear from their schools to raise money for the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes as October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Tables will be set up on both Friday and Saturday, with winners announced 3 p.m. Saturday. Play begins at 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday, with each school playing a total of three matches over the weekend.

October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the teams will be helping support the program "SUNY's Got Your Back," which was launched this past April. The year-long project is collecting comfort kits for victims and survivors of sexual and interpersonal violence who come to shelters and centers across the Empire State. Proceeds raised over the weekend will go toward buying Walmart gift cards to put in the comfort bags.

In addition, the SUNY Cortland group SAFER (Students Active for Ending Rape) will be setting up a table during the weekend to educate and raise awareness about all forms of sexual violence in and around the community. SAFER holds "Take Back The Night" marches on campus each semester as part of their support and educational mission.
