DRYDEN, N.Y. — An attempted burglary of a home in Dryden early Sunday morning was thwarted after the homeowner was awoken by the sound of breaking glass, the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office announced Monday.
At around 4:49 a.m. Sunday, deputies from the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office and officers from Tompkins Cortland Community College Police responded to a home on Portzline Drive, which is located near the entrance to the college, for a reported burglary in progress.
Arriving officers found that the homeowner "had detained the suspect as he tried to flee the area on foot," the sheriff's office said in a news release.
The homeowner told officers that he was awoken by the sound of a window being smashed in his garage. When he went to investigate, he saw two people standing outside the garage. They fled on foot.
After looking through his garage, the homeowner found one man who was still inside. The homeowner was able to grab the man before he tried escaping through a window, the sheriff's office said.
The man was later identified as Raymond Vanloan, 24. He was charged in the incident, authorities said.
Deputies also charged a 16-year-old suspect, though his information will not be released due to his status as a minor.
Vanloan was arraigned in Dryden Town Court and taken to the Tompkins County Jail.
