VIRGIL, N.Y. — A Dryden man has been identified as the sole victim in a car accident in the town of Virgil Monday night, the Cortland County Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday.

Thomas Rochat, 59, was traveling north on Kohne Road in a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer Monday night when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a culvert, causing the vehicle to roll over, authorities said.

Rochat was partially ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, according to Capt. Robert Derksen with the sheriff's office.

Rochat wasn't wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident, Capt. Derksen said, also noting that the area of the roadway where the accident occurred was on a curve.

The sheriff's office is continuing to investigate the cause of the accident. It's unclear if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

Assisting the sheriff's office at the scene was the Virgil Fire Department, Dryden Fire Department, Cortlandville Fire Department, Dryden Ambulance and TLC Ambulance.
