CORTLAND, N.Y. — A major winter storm continues to impact Cortland County on Monday, wreaking havoc for motorists and prompting the county to issue a travel advisory.

As of 6 p.m. today, 17 inches of snow has fallen in Cortland. A lake effect snow warning remains in effect for the entire county through 4 a.m. Tuesday.

The central New York winter storm caught the attention of ABC News, who sent reporter Gio Benitez to Cortland to report live for Monday's broadcast of ABC World News Tonight.

Benitez reported live from Main Street in Cortland, where more than 17 inches of snow has fallen as of 6 p.m. today.

The segment also featured live footage of a bus crash on Interstate 81 in Marathon Monday morning. The bus was full of high school students from the Rochester area who were on their way to New York City for a school trip.

Benitez spoke with Cortland Fire Chief Charles Glover, who advised residents to stay off the roads.

"We have a lot of accidents," Glover told Benitez. "They forget their winter driving skills."
