An 11-year-old Dryden Middle School student has been identified as the victim of a crash Sunday in Dryden. A high school student was also injured, but is in stable condition.
The crash occurred at 5:11 p.m. on the 500 block of Sheldon Road in Dryden, a 911 dispatcher said. One person struck by the vehicle died and another was transported to a hospital.
New York State Police said Monday that a pickup truck struck traveling south on Sheldon Road struck two female pedestrians who were walking south "on the unlit paved roadway." Police identified the driver as 26-year-old Andrew R. Porter, of Dryden.
Police have identified 11-year-old Kaylee Wacht, of Freeville, as the victim of the crash. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Tompkins County Medical Examiner Dr. Howard Silcoff. Another girl, Kristin Shevalier, 14, of Freeville, was also injured. She was flown by helicopter to Upstate University Medical Center in Syracuse for non-life threatening injuries to her arm and head, police said.
Shevalier is reportedly in stable condition.
The entire Dryden School community is "heartbroken," the district said in a statement Monday.
"The entire Dryden School community is heartbroken at the loss of our Middle School student and injury to our High School student. We are holding all the families involved tenderly in our hearts and thoughts. The principals have crisis teams in place to support students and staff this morning," the release said.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family of sixth-grader Wacht. She was described as having a contagious laugh and was a cheerleader, according to a Facebook post honoring her memory on Lion Legacy.
