MORAVIA, N.Y. — A 17-year-old Moravia High School student is in critical condition following a crash involving his car and a tractor trailer in Moravia Tuesday morning.

Dustin Mondics, 17, was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse following the crash, the Auburn Citizen reported. Mondics, who was on his way to basketball practice, was the only driver in the car, police said. The driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Since the crash, Mondics and his family have received an outpouring of support from the community. A candlelight vigil was held in Auburn for Mondics Tuesday night, and a GoFundMe page to cover his medical expenses has garnered more than $11,000 in donations since the fundraiser was launched on Wednesday.

According to family members, the medical procedures will be costly. Mondics is in an intensive care unit with a broken arm, a ruptured spleen, a broken pelvis and a small brain bleed.

Mondics, who is from the town of Sempronius in Cayuga County, plays on the Moravia high school basketball and football teams, family members said.
