Police: Two Cortland men fled cops with stolen merchandise

CORTLAND, N.Y. — Two local residents were arrested on New Year's Eve after trying to flee sheriff's deputies with stolen merchandise from Lowe's, according to the Cortland County Sheriff's Office.

At around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to a larceny in progress at Lowe's on Route 13 in Cortlandville. Off-duty police officers told the responding deputies that the suspects fled the scene with stolen merchandise heading north on Route 13.

Officers from the New York State Police and the Cortland County Sheriff's Office located the suspect's vehicle on Interstate 81 in the town of Preble and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, at which point th suspects fled the scene, authorities said. They were taken into custody by police a short distance later at the intersection of Route 281 and Route 80 in Tully.

Darin W. Bovay, 51, and Troy D. Noble, 48, both of Cortland, were charged with misdemeanors of petit larceny, unlawful fleeing of police, conspiracy and possession of a hypodermic instrument.

They were arraigned in Cortlandville Town Court Saturday and held on bail. They are scheduled to reappear in court on Wednesday.
