Bigger ALDI supermarket planned for Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. — Global supermarket chain ALDI is seeking local approval for a new retail store adjacent to its existing location in the town of Cortlandville.

The proposed 19,000-square-foot building would be about 25 percent larger than the current store. Once the building is constructed, ALDI would move its retail store to the new space and lease the old building to another business, according to the company's site plan application.

Developers also plan to reduce the size of the existing building and remove roughly 30 parking spaces from the lot.

The Cortland County Planning Board reviewed the company's site plan application at its December meeting. Some board members expressed traffic concerns, prompting county planners to request input from the New York State Department of Transportation before deciding on a vote.

Developers are waiting on approval from the planning board and the Cortlandville Town Board before breaking ground on the site. The town board plans to hold a public hearing on the project on Wed., Jan. 18. at Cortlandville Town Hall.
