Cortland man stole cash, credit cards from unlocked cars, police say

CORTLAND, N.Y. — Authorities arrested a man Friday in connection with a string of car larcenies that reportedly occurred in the town of Cortlandville since December of last year.

Akim Williams

Akim F. Williams, 25, faces five felony counts of criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree, which is a class E felony.

Between December 2016 and March 2017, Williams stole cash and credit and debit cards from unlocked vehicles along Route 281 in Cortlandville, according to the Cortland County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division.

Williams would use the money at local stores in the Cortlandville area to fraudulently purchase merchandise, authorities said.

Williams was located at his residence in the Penguin Trailer Park Friday and taken into custody without incident.

He was arraigned in Cortlandville Town Court and released to the county's Alternatives to Incarceration program with a future court appearance scheduled for Wednesday.
