CORTLAND, N.Y. — A man was forcibly removed from a vehicle and stabbed several times following a heated argument over money on Elm Street Wednesday evening, according to the City of Cortland Police Department.

At around 9 p.m. Wednesday, police were called to 52 Elm Street for a disturbance outside the Palm Gardens tavern. Before police arrived, however, the two parties involved left the scene in separate vehicles.

When the vehicles came to a stop at the intersection of Elm and River streets, one of the occupants in the pursuing vehicle got out of their car and forcibly removed a man from the vehicle in front of them and stabbed him several times, according to Lt. David Guerrera with the Cortland Police Department. The suspects fled the scene but were quickly apprehended at a nearby location in the city.

Donovan Fink, 17, from Cortland, was charged with first-degree assault, a class D felony, in connection with the stabbing. He was also charged with two misdemeanor counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was remanded to Cortland County Jail on $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 property bond.

Regina G. Diorio, 25, also from Cortland, was charged with harassment for punching the victim during the initial scuffle outside the bar, police said. She was also charged fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon for having several knives in her vehicle, police said. She was taken to Cortland County Jail on $500 cash bail.

The 19-year-old male victim suffered stab wounds to his back and thigh, Lt. Guerrera said. He was taken to Cortland Regional Medical Center and later transported to Upstate Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition as of Friday morning. His injuries are not life-threatening.

Correction: A previous version of this article implied that the stabbing occurred outside the Palm Gardens tavern. A previous version of this story also incorrectly stated the age of Donovan Fink. We apologize for the errors.
