Cortland firefighters extinguish early morning garage fire

CORTLAND, N.Y. — Two cars caught fire but were quickly put out by city firefighters Wednesday morning, the Cortland Fire Department said.

At around 3:45 a.m., the Cortland County 911 Center received two phone calls from people who saw smoke and flames in the area behind CVS Pharmacy on Port Watson Street.

Firefighters were initially dispatched to the intersection of Greenbush and William streets before narrowing down the exact location of the fire, which took place behind a vacant property on Williams Street.

Firefighters used two hose lines; one to protect the neighboring house, the other to extinguish the garage fire.

While damage occurred to the vinyl siding of one home, there was no major structural damage to the home, the fire department said in a news release Wednesday morning.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
